Pineapple is a large tropical juicy fruit with aromatic edible yellow flesh covered by a segmented spikey exterior. This tropical fruit is the most economically significant in its family and an icon of luxury in 17th century Europe. These fruits were even rented out for dinner parties to be the centerpiece at tables.

The name pineapple was given to the fruit due to its resemblance to pinecones.

Vitamins in Pineapple

Pineapple is loaded most prominently with Vitamin C. Vitamin C is responsible for supporting the immune system and provides antioxidant benefits. The immune system is so important because it's the body's first line of defense against germs. Vitamin C is also important because it aids in wound repair and iron absorption in the body. Pineapple also contains Vitamins A, B6, E, & K, as well as containing calcium, folate, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc. The trace mineral manganese, along with calcium, is important for maintaining strong bones. It also may stave off osteoporosis and helps improve overall bone and mineral density.

Antioxidant Properties of Pineapple

Pineapple is full of nutrients but also contains antioxidant properties. The main antioxidants in this tropical fruit include specifically phenolics, flavonoids, and vitamin C. Antioxidants are compounds in food that may help fight inflammation and free radicals in the body. Free radicals are molecules that can cause cellular damage and lead to health issues, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's, and eye problems. Filling up on antioxidant-rich foods like pineapple can play a role in countering those risks. Antioxidants also help fight oxidative stress caused by those free radicals.

May aid in Digestion

Pineapple may also aid in digestion. The fruit contains bromelain, a group of digestive enzymes, that may ease the digestion of meat. This can be helpful for people with pancreatic insufficiency, where the pancreas doesn't make enough digestive enzymes. Bromelain has been seen to reduce inflammatory markers in digestive tissues. Pineapples are also a great source of fiber which aids in digestive health.

Cancer Fighting Properties

Cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the body multiply and take over the healthy tissue. Its progression is commonly linked to oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent cancer, experts suggest eating a healthy diet — ideally one that’s high in antioxidants, which you can source through pineapple, to help fight off free radicals — to reduce your risk. Diets and blood concentrations high in antioxidants are associated with a lower risk of cancer.
